Will raised tobacco legal age stop young people smoking?

Now that the legal minimum age for purchasing tobacco has been raised from 16 to 18, will less young people take up smoking? Should the responsibility fall to retailers, or should it be illegal to smoke at 16? Have your say.

Why do they start in the first place and disobey the wishes of their parents?

Ridiculous overkill in my view it is only a minority of them who start at a young age anyway.

This government is full of anachronistic minds who remember sneaking out themselves no doubt for cigarettes too.

It is merely the thrill of disobedience for some and the image of escaping punishment!

Were there no law nobody would be interested instead they raise the profile of tobacco as a product higher than geosynchonous orbit.

It's now under the counter? It's like the pharmacy of embarassing illnesses. You walk in there and look around and realise the product you want is behind the er. So you say in front of everyone, can I have some Canestan please?

    What?

Can I have some CANESTAN please?

What do you want it for?

    My WILLY IS ITCHING!

Or have you got any lice shampoo?

What do you want it for?

while they say to another customer here is your prescription sir.

Privacy is such a wonderful thing.

Or go to post office and say can I check my savings or whatever and the beady eyes around you.. well we all remember the pensioners being mugged before they switched it to pay direct into your bank.

Is it micro-management? No it's micro mismanagement!

Whatever way you want to look at it, kids will get hold of them easily, just as they get hold of booze easily. The Majority of shops will still sell.

Should the age be raised ,YES. Will it stop kids smoking,NO. I would rather kids smoked than take up drugs. I am fed up with anti smokers. You dont see obese people being told that they cannot stuff their fat faces while walking along the street, which I find offensive, and they cost us all a lot more on the NHS than smokers.
