Many girls between the ages of 10 and 14 see self-harming as "normal behaviour" as a result of the stress caused by pressure to be sexually mature, according to Girlguiding UK. Do you agree that the images in magazines and on TV are making young girls increasingly anxious about their appearance, and leading to self-destructive behaviour? Share your thoughts.

Elaine, I'm sure that what you do and say is of immensive value to the vulnerable. Bless you for your caring nature. You might have guessed from my attitude to the 'cheap shot' creatures, that I too have personal experience of child abuse within the immediate family, and know only too well what damage this does. Thank God that we had the love and support of the extended family to carry us through. I'm only too aware that as you say, there are many lost souls out there today who have nothing like that, so self-harm or worse is an understandable if tragic outcome for them. We survived, didn't we , but by comparison we were the lucky ones. Best wishes to you and yours.
