As fewer people follow a faith, has religion lost its place in western society? Does secularisation and religious tolerance simply polarise relations with states that follow strict religious regimes? Has a lack of religious focus created a vacuum within societies? Should religion and politics even be linked?

What good is a god if he/she/it doesn't help out when required? So we're supposed to worship, grovel and pray to an entity that doesn't give a damn? If He/She/IT doesn't give a damn why the hell should we? So much for omniscience, omnipresence and omnipotence. Apologising for God's absence by making up excuses is the trait of a brown nose. Does God only want to be surrounded by 'yes' men?
If Jesus was right there, why allow a car crash to happen in the first place? Why didn't he act to save those who called on him or was he just a casual observer? So much for the love of God then.
Yes He should show up - then at least we'd know He was real and not just the romanticised ravings of those who find reality too hard to accept. It seems to me that belief is all one way - for the benefit and ego massage of 'God'. How selfish can you get? Where's the return on the investment? Or are we slaves to this uncaring, unsharing God who can't even be bothered to turn up and help His followers?
Of course there is a more obvious explanation. 'He' doesn't exist.

"We're quite happy to ignore God most of the time, but expect him to show up when WE need HIM. Any reason why he should?"
Peter, if a religious leader accidentally fell off a cliff, do you honestly believe that praying on the way down would save him or her from a disastrous end before they hit the bottom.
To Atheist from Reality:
I think Jimbo's point was that EVERYBODY knows God exists, because it's the way we are "wired". Most of the time it is suppressed because of man's natural inclination to live his life without God i.e. go his own way. But in an emergency situation the truth will always come out!
As for where Jesus was, well he was right there. I don't know what the cause of the accident was, but it seems to me that we want to have our cake and eat it. We're quite happy to ignore God most of the time, but expect him to show up when WE need HIM. Any reason why he should?

"I will never forget witnessing a multi-car crash on the M25 and most of the injured were desperately calling to Jesus. I was a passenger in a juggernaut at the time and we got out to help."

And very humanitarian and praiseworthy of you to do so Jimbo. But where was Jesus?

To George Findley
There is more evidence to suggest the supernatural exists than not - which is why we have religion - which in turn is man's interpretation of the supernatural. The scientists have given us nothing to prove the supernatural doesn't exist except stupid stuff like the Bible got it wrong. The Bible was written over 2000 years ago and was chiefly symbolic before being translated into several different languages down through the years which is why we have Bible study.
George Findlay says,
Jimbo, human beings were the authors of every religious document. Without contact with the supernatural, where did the get their evidence.
The ancient market place story tellers perhaps?
