From the end of 2009, cigarette packets sold in the UK will carry graphic picture warnings depicting the effects of smoking. Images will show damaged lungs and rotten teeth.
While scientists predict that the new warnings will result in up to 10,000 people quitting, pro-smoking campaigners say the move ‘victimises’ smokers.
Do you think the new warnings will help people to quit, or will people simply get used to them? Should the Government impose this sort of legislation, or is this a case of the nanny state? Have your say.

Cigarette means 'small cigar' you twit!
smokers dont care , just like they dont care or respect non-smokers wanting clean air to breath . They are inconsiderate slobs , throwing their " butts " anywhere they please . oh by the way men ,cigarettes were first designed for WOMEN - thats why it ends in ette - think of that next time you think your a tough guy for smoking
I truely think that gruesome pictures will stop people from smoking. I am very excited about the new approach the uk is taking to decrease smoking. about a year ago, i caught my son pretend smoking. He said he wanted to try it because it looked as though the smokers were inhaling flavor and having fun as they smoked. He was six years old then. So i got online and showed him pictures of the damage smoking does to your heart, teeth, lungs and brain. Now, today I am on this web site and posting this comment because a friend of his who is now nine years old is also an expirimental smoker. My son, who is seven now brought his friend to the house so i could show him the gruesome pictures of damaged lungs and teeth that I had showed my son when he was just six years old. If it was not for those pictures, my son would have been an active smoker by age eleven.
they are forgetting about the kids here spend the day out with your kid and all he or she will see on the walls is that. i would like some thing that i could look at for my kids
I don't think it woulld deter a seasoned smoker, what people forget is that smoking is a physical addiction, and difficult to quit, a few pictures of gruesome looking organs won't deter, although I feel it could be usefull for stopping people from taking up the habbit in the first place, I would aplaud that, if it works
