From the end of 2009, cigarette packets sold in the UK will carry graphic picture warnings depicting the effects of smoking. Images will show damaged lungs and rotten teeth.
While scientists predict that the new warnings will result in up to 10,000 people quitting, pro-smoking campaigners say the move ‘victimises’ smokers.
Do you think the new warnings will help people to quit, or will people simply get used to them? Should the Government impose this sort of legislation, or is this a case of the nanny state? Have your say.
Those mindless idiots who smoke will not take notice of any sort of warnings. All that poison from the fags must badly affect their 'brains'. If I was told don't drink that bottle of bleach it will do bad things to your insides and could kill you would I drink it? NO!
They never have done in the past, what makes you think it will effect kids brought up on violent PC/Video games...

The anti-smoking campaign kicked off thanks to the motor industry. Large numbers of cars appeared on the roads at about the same time as cigarettes appeared in the population's mouths. It was 20 years later that the increase in the incidence of lung cancer was observed. Many doctors gave up smoking under the weight of the evidence, but still lived in the big world of motor cars. Guess what? The incidence of lung disease dropped sharply amongst doctors whilst the general public's incidence continued to rise. That is why governments took action, and warned the public about the effects of smoking.
If these pictures are printed on cigarette packets, I really hope it opens up discussions with children in families.
Judging by comments on this board, people who already smoke are unlikely to be put off.
I reckon it just might discourage kids from taking up the habit in the first place however - particularly if the kids are seeing first hand, the side-effects of smoking in people around them.
That, backed up by education in schools just might prevent some kids from taking up the habit.
I have a great suggestion on how to give up the weed. It worked for my son and nothing else did. Find a good looking, non smoking girlfriend, fall in love with same girlfriend. Realise you will lose her if you don't give up and the rest is just a matter of willpower.

Will gruesome picture warnings stop people from smoking?
