The National Health Service was founded in 1948 as the world’s first completely free health system as part of a drive to provide free benefits to all those in need. 60 years later, is the NHS living up to its original premise of being a world-leader in health care? Or is it failing British taxpayers with MRSA and poor cancer survival rates? Share your thoughts.

Authur... My wife DOES NOT 'pick and choose' like you state. Read the posts and answer correctly please.
Your comments are extremely offensive to all that work in the NHS so stop throwing dirt from over in Italy to here in the uk.
To all those who just attacked me, no I'm not running away from unpaid bills, always paid my way.
No,I've never been timid, always speak my mind.
No, I'm not psychic, his wife remarked that smokers should not recieve treatment, because their illness was self inflicted,so I said it's not for her to pick and choose. The NHS was set up for the sick and ill to get equal treatment.
The Labour party more than doubled the amount that went into the health service, nearly a 100 billion pounds and still, despite what you are saying, it has failed to deliver.
Actualy it's wrapping your ribs in a bandage that can produce shallow breathing. The nurse whom I asked, could of taken a minute to explain but snapped at me.As if I had no right to ask questions, which is why I walked out.
You health workers say it's all down to government and managers, hospitals are dirty, thats why there are all these nasty infections that are killing people.
People, especialy the old, are scared stiff of going into hospital, why because many only come out in a box.
Why do the NHS have such poor cancer survival rates.
NHS do a sterling job with the limited resources they have available to them. There is no doubt that a "paying" health service would probably provide quicker treatments but not very likely that the way in which that treatment was given would be better. Our nurses and doctors work incredibly hard and they do not have the opportunity to refuse to treat drunks, druggies, abusers, rude people and people who are there because of something they did to themselves. Our nurses and doctors have to put up with a considerable amount of sheight on a low salary and they do a damn fine job thank you very much. The NHS is failing because of the government plain and simple but not because of the staff. Too many "manager" in the NHS taking too high a salary is the problem.
To 'NHS worker and PROUD from England'
Well said. Couldn't have put it better myself.
Arthur said to 'T from West Yorkshire' that 'your wife wants to pick and choose who she helps'. Er, Arthur, are you psychic then?
I'm a frontline NHS worker, and i'm critical of it sometimes, but it really drives me nuts when people only see the negative side. Arthur, the main reason that the NHS sometimes fails us all, is that it's under so much pressure from being the panacea for all the non paying lowlifes that inhabit this country. It always makes me laugh just how vocal people become when they move elsewhere: I bet Arthur was as meek as a kitten when he lived in the U.K..
Finally Arthur, just to pick up on your point about lack of painkillers for broken ribs:-
Current stance is that strong analgesic medication is to be avoided(at least in the first instance), in the case of fractured ribs, because there is a risk of respiratory distress (Google it, Arthur) due to shallow breathing. There is always a method in the madness. Capeesh, Arthur?
Aurthur, get a life you sad grumpy little man. Why you in Italy??? running away from unpaid bills perhaps??? NOBHEAD.
