Police chief Alf Hitchcock has revealed a possible plan for dealing with unemployed teenagers. While Brooke Kinsella (former Eastenders actress whose brother was stabbed) has called for young people to be conscripted into mandatory National Service. Between 1945 and 1963, 2.5 million young men did their time in National Service. How would you feel if we had National Service today? Would it deal with the perceived current issues around teenage behaviour?

Spot on ! If teenagers cannot or will not get a job and insist on being troublesome at the least it will instill some respect for others, bring back national Service
Kerry - In today's society, it would clearly be unacceptable to have a National Service system that applied only to boys. As you are not getting any replies, here is a repost of my comments on July 16th.
"The general assumption seems to be that National Service would only apply to boys! Presumably in our "gender neutral" age, any National Service, whether military or community based, would apply equally to girls. There is no justification today for the sexist National Service which still exists in some EU countries (why isn't it banned?) where boys have to give up a couple of years of their life but girls don't. To make matters worse, in some countries girls are offered the option to do National Service (following complaints that excluding them was sexist!) but it is not obligatory. National Service should be covered by the same anti sexist laws as everything else."
