Is the Post Office doomed?

As many as 2,500 community Post Offices are set to close across the country, and the figure could rise to 6,500. Do you think the stamp of death for one of Britain’s best-loved institutions is drawing ever nearer? What, if anything, can be done to get the Post Office sorted?

The Government have done it again; worked a blinder!
What's everyone talking about? Fot Godssake, the Post Office closures are simply to do with fullfilling European quotas and abiding by EU directives. The United Kingdom Parliament can do nothing (apart from attempting to pull the wool over our eyes).
We, that is us in the United Kingdom, cannot have a Royal Mail, thus says Brussels.
It seems to me that as the argument rages on, it is this little piece of information that is overlooked and forever lost.
The United Kingdom Parliament is neutered and unable to stop the inexorible tide to complete European integration. Alex Salmond is almost there with his proposals for Scotland. He'd rather be tied up to a European Parilament than one that has stood the test of time for the last 300 years.
At the risk of appearing politically incorrect, we'll all have to speak French as a first language next...ask Nicholas and his 6 month presidency of the EU!

No post Offices should be closed, the PO should not be privatised.
All post offices are places where people meet, more so the older folks like me, i have known my postmaster for over 25yrs and are on first name terms.
The PO should stay in the hands of the British government, if it was owned by a private company the profits would go in there pockets and not go back into the PO.
I am at a loss as to why the government can not run the PO on the same lines as a private company would.
Privatization does not work, we have found out at our cost with transport, (less services, higher fares) utilities, (gas, electric, water, all prices keep rising).
Post offices and sub post offices are the peoples, and that is how it should stay.

the post office is doomed and it is all down this goverment. i work for royal mail and this goverment wont allow the price of posting letters to go up. because it costs far more than you actualy get charged. and to all you moaning about the time you get your post, get use to it as it is going to get later and later. they have just stopped nights at my depot. so the work that would have been done by the time we got in. now gets done by us in the morning. so we are not getting out of the depot now until 10.

Modernisation in both practises and thinking is required for the fantastic organisation that is Royal Mail to survive and make profits, Pricing must reflect the levels of Service offered. Introduce 5day, 4day, 3day,2day & next day deliveries, let people decide what they want to pay for, strict penalties for failing to provide the appropriate service level should be introduced; If you want a next day service you have to pay for it, the prices for each service level should be universal to all.
