Family doctors are receiving more pay for doing less work as a result of a new contract awarding pay increases of 58% while reducing working hours at a cost of £1.8bn to the taxpayer, according to complaints from MPs.
The system, based on bonuses paid for reaching performance targets, has reportedly resulted in an average pay increase of £100,000 a year for GPs. So why do these bright ideas always seem to fail so miserably? What would you do to give GPs an incentive to provide a good health service?
