Is Britain dumbing down?

It’s that time of year when everyone starts harping on about how exams are getting easier and easier.

But do you think that this is symptomatic of dumbing down in British society as a whole? Are video games, text speak and a celebrity-obsessed culture breeding a generation of dimwits who will one day rule the country? Share your thoughts.

I largely agree with you Alan.
The process was started however by Tony Crosland, apicked up by successive governments right through to today.
Thatchers lot decided that society had to be destroyed and set about selling anything that was valuable. They then turned on education and tried to wreck the state systen by introducing a useless National Curriculum which was totally Grammar School orientated, eg woodwork became technology which degenerated to "Sawdust production."
It had all continued OFSTED was invented with the sole purpose of thumping hard working teachers and telling the public what an utterly poor job they were doing. They were sent in to schools to condem them, in fact they didn't have a clue as to what they were looking at but condemmed very well.
This lot came along with even more crazy ideas, Litteracy and Numeracy policies which were totally out of touch with reality, on top of monthly changes to the whole system which letf evryone totally confused.
No wonder we don't know where we stand.
Comprehensive schools were a great idea, poorly though through and never funded properly. They had the crazy idea that if you lumped everone together they would all rise to the standard of the best, they forgot human nature which works on the principle of "Why am I having to work harder than him."
Sorry for the rant, the politicians make my blood boil over this on.
