Should the age of criminal responsibility be raised?

Under-14s should not be held responsible for their actions and should never be locked up in children’s homes or young offender institutions, according to The Prison Reform Trust. Their report calls for the criminal responsibility age to be raised from 10 to 14, claiming incarceration doesn't deter under-14s, since 75% of them reoffend within a year of release. Do you agree?

Lower age . Sharia law would help sort it out. An eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth.

I do a lot of work with "bad lads" for want of a better expression. I see them in the court room with their parents, most of whom I have to say are honest law abiding citizens who are completely horrified to find out that their little darlings are in fact a menace to society. It does not matter what background you come from, any child can go off the rails at any time. Criminal responsibility starts from when a child has an understanding of their own actions. We let our children go to senior school, usually by themselves at the age of 11. We as a society feel they are old enough and responsible enough to walk to and from school, crossing roads etc. That is no different to having a clear understanding of what is right and what is wrong. The age should not be raised and the punishment for criminal behaviour for children should be severe, not just a telling off from a judge or policeman which is what I see daily.

I know a way to solve this problem so that we can concentrate on looking after children and providing them with the care and attention they need. We should ensure that people are not spending more time at work than they are with their families. This would mean increasing wages and not expecting people to spend so much time at work just so that they can pay their bills instead of enjoying and concentrating more on looking after their children. Secondly we could locate a secluded, unpopulated island somewhere (maybe in the Outer Hebrides) for all the child haters. They could then be as intolerant and abusive to themselves as they want and leave the rest of us alone to enjoy the company of our children as they grow up.
I can't believe a normal person has actually said something sensible on this board. I though it was all full of nasty, evil child haters and abusers. Well done Nomde.

It should be lowered. And punishment should mean punishment, not a tap on the wrist and an African holiday.
