Should the age of criminal responsibility be raised?

Under-14s should not be held responsible for their actions and should never be locked up in children’s homes or young offender institutions, according to The Prison Reform Trust. Their report calls for the criminal responsibility age to be raised from 10 to 14, claiming incarceration doesn't deter under-14s, since 75% of them reoffend within a year of release. Do you agree?

George. Respect does not come from fear. Fear and hatred come from fear. Zimbabwe is an example of that. To earn respect you have to show respect. For generations there were vicious punishments for stealing a loaf of bread etc. Prisons were dirty, nasty violent places where death from illness was a daily occurrence. Going by that crime should have disappeared totally. It hasn't. Over the whole population crime is not very high. Why young people want to knife each other to death is a sad mystery. It does seem to happen in large poor areas though, in major cities more than in smaller towns. Most youngsters are law abiding and getting on with their lives. Our constant treating of all of them as criminals causes resentment not respect. I do not say I know the answer, but i do know that alienating them will not work. When i answer on these boards I do not change peoples names or where their location is. That is bad manners.

i think the age should be lowerd ,not raised. makeing the parents responsible tells the kids they can get away with anything they like.when i was young i knew full well what i was doing, and when a young yob puts a brick through a window ,or sets fire to a car after stealng it ,or mugging someone at knifepoint ,they know exactly what they are doing.

Maisie from faireyland---Let me explain it in very few words--where's me mallet. In my lifetime--I'm 67, and in that time, I have witnessed the complete dismantling of every conceivable means by which the establishment can control and treat misbehavior by children--youth--and adults. There is NO deterrent anymore, NO meaningfull punishment at all. What prevents us ALL from running amok ? Upbringing, example, envirement,--etc etc. Thanks to the gutless self serving irrisponsible liberal traitors, who allowed this to evolve in the last 40 odd years, there is no big stick and far far too much carrot. Out of FEAR-----comes RESPECT !!
