Should pupils have to stay in school until 17?

Students starting secondary school this week will be legally obliged to attend until they are 17, under new legislation.

They should be focussing on the education standard, if they reach a set standard at a set age then they should be able to choose. it's the standard that's important not the age of the pupil. That way the student will work to achieve the required grade. This might mean the we have students in school at a far more mature age than we have at present. But, it might also mean that student that achieve the required grade leave early.

I had not meant to post again, but the comments by Baz from Portsmouth are so shallow that they need questioning. The qualified tradesmen helping with the re-building of my hundred years old house are not negative moaners and the results are excellent. People with a "loser" attitude can always rationalise their own failings and shortcomings. If Baz thinks he is seeing hard times (after how many years of growth and name your own price for work on houses?) then a REAL downturn might be the sharp shock he needs. The way to get another 30s slump is: talk everything down; play dirty Daily Mail type politics; concentrate on all things bad, not the future that CAN be built though probably not by the Baz's of this world; forget that this is a small island nation surrounded by highly competitive countries many of which have craftsmen who would work a week for uk day rate. But above all, virtually all our competitor nations see rented property as the norm. Anyone who buys a house has their feet super-glued to its floor and anyone not prepared, or unable, to be mobile has trouble competing for work. My own personal view is that the English (and I do mean English) are not class based, but all too often money-snobs, and it is that which drives the house buying mania. Let anyone who disagrees say which of the following their Great Grandparents owned:
house; car; phone; fridge; central heating; new clothes; in fact everything that Baz et al think are their right to have. Those older generations were far finer and braver people than you will ever be.
.Old Mother Nature does not allow artificial situations to continue and she is ruthless; so, keep on reading the Mail, accentuate the negative, and you will get your hard times all right. And the best of English luck to you.

If pupils were to be taught the most basic subject of all, RESPECT, then perhaps they could decide for themselves whether to go out and work, or Try harder to 'better themselves', Then it would be a Good Idea. As things stand at the moment, Since The Child Act of 1989, which Took Away ALL The Powers of being either a Teacher Or a Parent, They now have Noone to teach them Respect..Hence the shortage of teachers today...So, the Government, instead of Admitting the failure of said Act, TRIES yet another ploy to 'keep them off of the streets' and one assumes, 'off of the dole', by getting them to get More Useless Qualifications for a World that Cannot Handle Them.
Still, it keeps the Unemployment Figures LOOKING Low, and That is ALL This Government Wants...Is for people to Think that This Government is Doing Something GOOD, and it isn't.
Incidentally, I left school at 15 back in 1962. I had No qualifications, but I had RESPECT For My Teachers, For My Elders, and for My Parents, and For the Property of Other People.....If they could learn THAT Alone by the time they were 14, then they should be ALLOWED to leave at that Age...!
