Should council workers be snooping in our gardens?

Council officers in Lancashire have been assigned to snoop in residents’ back gardens, looking at how many wheelie bins they have, and taking away any ‘unauthorised’ refuse containers.

Officers were seen propping ladders against garden fences to peer into residents’ gardens. Do you think this is going too far? Share your thoughts.

Rache. Anything in wrong bins i.e. garden in household, household in garden. Recyclables in the household rubbish, this should be in other boxes. What they dont count for is someone rushing out in the morning who may just throw something in the wrong bin by mistake. We have to be perfect.

I dont know whether they check in my area, although I am usually in when my bins are emptied. The only thing I have noticed is that the men open the lid and glance in, probably to see if there is garden rubbish or household rubbish in the wrong bin. As all my household rubbish is in bags they couldnt see anyway. My bins are on my property, close to the road so, as someone else said, they would be trespassing.

I am assuming that they are not permitted to go through your bins until they have left your property as that would be like going in your house and rumbling through your drawers. I put my bin at the entrance of my front garden as if I put it outside on the path I am open to being sued if someone falls over it on public property. In which case, once the bins have left a property, how on earth could they prove that any items they find in a bin were actually from that property. If there is an incentive for the bin men to clamp down on infringers then that would leave it open for them to plant things in your bin without your knowledge. Also if other people put things in your bin without your knowledge, how would you know. Apart from all of that, with identity theft being so hot at the moment, I am horrified that the Council are enforced to search for personal information in our rubbish in ANY instance. If I found anyone going through my bins on my property I would call the police.
I can see a lot of court cases at the tax payers expense for what?
