Never blagged an upgrade but have been upgraded 3 times.
Virgin atlantic upgraded me to Chicago, American Airlines did on the way back to Heathrow.
The best one was BA who upgraded me on both journeys when i flew to the states. Outbound i was told i was being upgraded and i pressed it a little that as i was doing them a favour and got the upgraded return as well.
From experience it certainly helped that I was travelling alone (freed up a seat that could then be used for a couple to sit together) and also that i was clean shaven and presentable helped.
Did feel a little guilty though on the BA outbound flight when another passenger in conversation was complaining to me about the airfare he had paid for the return trip and I had been upgraded and had only paid £172 return for my original ticket.(didn't tell him that though!)
