Heathrow is a nightmare only because it is so bloody busy and unfortunately much can be said getting in/out of the airport too. The whole flying trip into and out of Heathrow is just manic because the overload of passengers is at breaking point. Considering this it is a wonder it isnt a lot worse, much smaller airports offer far less hospitality and are much less organised i.e Minneapolis, Sandford, and pretty much most US city airports.
Just returned from a month tour of China shuttle from Manchester to Heathrow term 5 then term 4 to Shanghai cases lost for 2 weeks returned Beijing to term 4 shuttle to Manchester 2 cases lost again but this time returned within 24 hrs but both wrecked, Heathrow should be shut down and start again from scratch Shanghai/Beijing airports brilliant effecient relaxed and stress free
Most people and airlines are obsessed with using Heathrow Airport as their point of arrival/departure to/from the uk and many passengers who use Heathrow are from outside the London area. There is all too little thought given to further major development of the airports in other uk Metropolitan Areas.
West Midlands - Birmingham
Greater Manchester
Merseyside - Liverpool
Tyne and Wear - Newcastle
West Yorkshire - Leeds/Bradford
South Yorkshire - Sheffield
Bristol
Cardiff
Glasgow
Edinburgh
The government should see that each of these airports is developed, with New Terminals and at least Two Long Length Runways at each.
The German City of Frankfurt is much smaller than most uk cities and yet it has a Huge International Airport.
Please let's have no further developments at the Heathrow Dump. Gatwick, Stansted and Luton should each have one additional runway and NO NO NO to a Third runway at Heathrow.
If the American Airlines Executive dislikes Heathrow so much then he has the choice to move his airline operations to other airports in the uk. Some operations were recently moved from Gatwick to Heathrow. My advice is that these operations should return to Gatwick. Furthermore, American Airlines should restore its Birmingham to Chicago service which was abandoned a few years ago.
I live in Dubai and although the airport does look nice I still find it a nightmare landing there! one has to walk and walk and walk, then there can be very long passport queues, after that it can happen that the luggage does not come for over an hour...Then one walks outside and there are masses and masses of Asians there waiting for family and friends to arrive, the noise is overwhelming. It can be difficult to get a taxi after a lot of flights have just arrived. People are rude and push you around. I guess if you just use an airport once during a holiday whichever impression you have of it then sticks with you. But Dubai Airport I have been using for years now and the above is 90% of the time the true picture!
I must agree though - I have been to quite a few airports all over the world and Heathrow is the one I hate most. Peter from South Croydon is right: far too many flights got to and from here as it is the closest to London centre. I fly to Gatwick as I have family on the south coast - much better.
Until recently Warsaw Terminal 1 was pretty grim - cramped, busy, chaotic. The new Terminal 2 is very lovely (and shiny) though. Have to agree on Copenhagen - lovely and with no flight announcements, very peaceful. V.dissapointed in LAX, was expecting more. Ronneby in Sweden is good if for no other reason watching the military jets take off...
