The EU has given up its plan to force Britain to go metric. Britons can carry on using imperial measurements such as pints, pounds and miles. Is this a victory for British tradition or is it time the country conformed with Europe? With imperial measurements abandoned in school lessons decades ago is a metric Britain inevitable? Have your say.
We should ignore eu rules as the rest of europe does. I work in germany, belgium & france and in most bars even the staff still smoke when it is supposed to be an eu ruling to not smoke in public places. So keep britain british and english english and lets stop being dictated to by the eu and islam
1760 yds =1 mile .I used to jump out of aircraft at 800ft.I still get confusd with meters to the mile we still get fined for speeding in mph Stopping distance is still calculated in feet or yards now we can buy our goods in lbs again no wonder people are confused the only good thing that comes out of Europe is the road back to the uk Thank God.
I dont mind either really but what gets me is distance!
In metric I cant tell how high or how long a distance was/is and what I would like is to have an immediate translation, either spoken or written on the screen, telling me how far a poor man fell off a bridge, e.g. That way I can judge whether he lived or died.
I learned both systems at school over half a century ago.The metric system was far easier to learn and remember.More than half the poulation has never learned anything but metric, and a lot mor think they know the imperial sytem, but they only know bits of it.When I was at school, the guinea,(=21 shillings= £1.05) was used for most prices that were more than a few pounds.Burton's was advertised as the Fifty Guinea Tailor.Do you really want to go back to 240 pennies to a pound? 16 drams=1 ounce,16 ounces = 1 pound? 14 pounds = 1 stone,2 stone=1 quarter, 4 quarters= 1 hundredweight, 20 hundred weight =1 ton? 2240lbs to a ton? 1760 yards to a mile? 4840 square yards to an Acre? 4 roods =1 acre?..3 different kinds of ounces? Troy ounce, avoir dupois ounce, fluid ounces?.What about tons, short tons, and long tons.4 gills=1pint, 2pints= 1 quart,4 quarts 1 gallon,2 gallons=1 peck,4 pecks 1 bushel? These are just some..the list goes on..and on..and on..Do you really want to go back to multiplying and dividing by all these weird amounts, instead of just adding zeroes,or moving a decimal point? And what about the Scots, should they goe back to their measures, different to England, but with the same name? There were dozens of different weighing systems around the world.
Can anyone name a single country in the world that does not use metric? Don't say the US, because the metric sytem has been legal there since the 1890's, and the old measures are gradually being phased out.Next time you are in the US, look at the weights on packets of food, or bottles. Some states have ounces and grams, but some only have grams. In fact in many states it is illegal NOT to have the weight in metric. As for me, I would not give a pennyweight for the old imperial system..in fact not a farthing,..not even a groat.
The Imperial system was fine when Britain had an empire where it could dictate what was what to the defeated indigenous populations. Those days have long gone, but folk still hang on grimly to its relics. Let's get into tune with the rest of Europe; it'll keep on costing us a fortune 'til we do - !
