EU shows an ounce of sense

The EU has given up its plan to force Britain to go metric. Britons can carry on using imperial measurements such as pints, pounds and miles. Is this a victory for British tradition or is it time the country conformed with Europe? With imperial measurements abandoned in school lessons decades ago is a metric Britain inevitable? Have your say.

"Thank you" to John from Coventry (page 1) for putting the issue in its proper perspective, viz. historical rather than hysterical. I suggest that everyone should read it before commenting.

For those who insist on banging on about "Europe can't tell us what to do", get a life! Converting from Imperial to Metric has little to do with European mandates and a lot to do with common sense. How people can cling desperately to a system of measures that use bases 3, 8, 12, 14, 16, 20, 112 and 1760 (when a simple base 10 for everything is available) is beyond belief. What will they want next? Return to sterling currency?!

It seems that those who make the biggest fuss about learning "new" ways are usually those who express themselves in a manner that also shows their lack of ability in their own language. For those who have a genuine excuse for lack of education, ways can be found to remedy the situation - the compulsive ignoramus, however, will never admit to laziness and remains beyond all help.

Well, I've read most of the comments ppl have left and I have to say that, as an engineer I have had to adapt to using both imperial and metric BUT, its a whole lot easier for me to convert imperial measurements into their metric equivalents so I guess the day will come when we fully convert but honestly, is it really such a bad thing?? I dont think so personally..

no matter what way you look at it this is only a minor setbsck for european control of our country and so i say lets continue the way we are going and join the 21st century lest we get left behind.

    Chris B,
What are our MEPs doing?, enjoying their approx 50ml spirit measures at our expense. Approximate you ask?. Yes because their allowed to to pour approximate measures from the bottle. while we're stuck with 35ml optical measures.(Average size measure). For around four times the price.
