Catherine Tate v Freema Agyeman

Catherine Tate v Freema Agyeman

Catherine Tate landed the role of Doctor Who's new companion, reprising her role as Donna from the 2006 Christmas special in the new BBC series. Meanwhile, Freema Agyeman, who played the Doctor's existing companion Martha Jones, only gets to return mid-series. Has Freema been snubbed in favour of Catherine? Who is the better companion for the Doctor?

Catherine Tate's cameo WAS brilliant but Freema Agyeman was by far the better "companion". she looks more the part; prettier and more intelligent. She has better "credentials" as it were. I think she's been overlooked in favour of Catherine Tate's more recognisable persona simply for the senationalistic value it lends the programme. But Dr. Who doesn't need gimmicks. The makers should give Freema another shot at being the Doctors assistant, perhaps as a newer, more confidant woman who finally stands a chance of having a fling with him, 'cos that love thing he had with Rose made it even more watchable than usual. I was disappointed when he didn't give his new companion a chance to replace Rose in his affections.

I repeat for all those who say Martha was 'strong' (notably a lot of women) please tell me how? Is a woman bleating each week her deepest love for Doctor, who has been rejected for others including an Edwardian woman and the master(?!!!), can be termed strong. I suppose that she keeps taking humiliation is evidence.
Bring back Freeya for her ACTING ABILITY not image & attitude. What a sad shallow world.

Oh come on Kate 25/7 & Spencer 19/7, Cate Tate 'awful' in role? No way! She was simply playing a character who WAS a right airhead. Didn't you get it? Remember The Doctor saying to her didn't she realise something weird about her husband before she married him & she admitted she hardly knew him, he treated her like dirt but she still loved him! It was a comedy take on the role - just as different Doctors different interpretations to the role likewise their assistants. Notice so many people have it in for Catherine Tate, don't know if because their annoyed at her comedy success.
Re. Freeya - so many people rate her so highly. Not slagging her off personally because she comes across as quite an accomplished actor - I think my irritation lies with the script which is obviously written for an American TV market. Why? In every Doctor WHO from John Pertwee onwards there has always been tha hint of flirtation - reaching a peak (no pun intended) - with skimpy Layla. With these new series that has changed with far less subtlety. Billie Piper, with hindsight, manage to straddle both requirements perfectly (no pun intended here either - I must be in my "Carry on" mode). Freeya was pushed to the logical conclusion: each week's episode became eaten into as a love story with nearly every epiosode Freeya pouring out her heart to some soul about her undying love for The Doctor. Is this a 'modern day assistant' in the years after Feminism (I suppose the other would be the typical "help me screamer"). That is NOT Doctor Who; and it caused me Spencer the same frustration you feel for next assistant and I was seriously considering stop watching it after 37 years!
It simply because US audiences genuinely can't understand/like subtlety, satire, irony; these things have to be spelt out. I hope Freeya does come back and hopefully having learned her role, having me rejected so openly & humiliatingly SEVERAL times, will be stronger, independent and focussed on saving the world than her future wedding ring.
