Paul Gascoigne: where did it all go wrong?

Former England hero Paul Gascoigne (see Paul Gascoigne's career in pictures) has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act, after appearing "unwell and in an agitated state" while approaching members of the public on Sunday, allegedly harassing people to buy him alcohol.

This latest incident follows a string of mishaps for the ex-Newcastle, Spurs and Lazio legend after he was hospitalised for pneumonia in 2005 and then a stomach ulcer in 2007, and was then detained in February 2008 after an incident in a Tyneside hotel.

Why did such a talent as Gazza end up in such a state? Could the world of football have done more to help such a brittle character?

Have your say on Paul Gascoigne.

the only person that can help him is himself, lets hope he does . he has given football fans all over the world, fantastic entertainment on and off the pitch

I will bet that the friends he has round him now are not the ones that help put him where he is now

The thoughts of every Rangers fan are with Paul Gascoigne, one of the best players ever to have had the priviledge of pulling on a blue shirt.
Hopefully he can get the help and support he needs to get him back to full health.
During his playing days he gave so many people so much happiness and it would be nice to see some of those people there for him now when he needs them, although I agree that he needs to want to help himself.
Hopefully he knows how much every Rangers fan still loves him. Remember that he's the Gazza - There's only one Paul Gascoigne.

Self inflicted - tough!!! There are people with far more problems than him, without four million quid in the bank struggling to live day to day, supporting families despite there being no light at the end of tunnel. Personally if he wants to drink himself to death in a gutter I couldn't care less, he will get no sympathy from me.. He's had far more breaks than most people will ever get in their life. A total loser who is famous only for blubbing after he didn't get his way in an England match
