   Don't have an alcoholic drink beforehand. Too many people think that they need Dutch courage and turn up to first dates smelling like a brewery. Anything you've learnt about dating from past experience or books flies out of the window when you're drunk. During dates don't overdo the alcohol; stick to one or two units or lay off booze altogether.
   
   If dating really scares you then go out on group dates instead. Get confident in other social situations and concentrate on making friends instead of getting dates. Try joining a book club or a discussion group so you can learn to speak with confidence and at the same time know when to shut up and listen to other people talking.
