Big Brother - Should the police be able to demand ID anytime?

Police and immigration officers will be able to stop anyone and demand proof of identity under proposed new powers to be announced. Anybody who refuses the Big Brother demand could face arrest and a possible prison sentence. The move would effectively take Britain back to the Second World War, when people were stopped and asked to 'show their papers'. What do you think? Should the police be able to demand ID anytime?

I think they should be able to ask for identification, provided there is a genuine reason to ask. Also they should be at liberty to ask all facets of society for that information not just one or two class or racial types. The only people who in my opinion are against any form of ID seem to be those who might have something to hide such as criminals or benefit fraudsters. Hopefully by allowing identity to be checked some of these illegal activities may be curtailed and the perpetrators made to return there ill gotten gains to the benefit of the law abiding citizens that this government has seemingly forgotten.

If you've got nothing to hide, where's the problem ?
The most heinous crime most of us comitt is driving at 32 mph in abuilt up area, so if it helps the Police to help us - go for it !
Banks and the Police can demand a biker remove his / her helmet before a transaction / interview, so why not any "religous / cultural" face covering for any man / woman ?
My grandparents were penniless non-Englsih speaking immigrants when they arrived in the uk from Russia in the 1890's but they followed one basic ideal : "The law of the land is the law !"
It's a pity the dross let in the uk these days abuse the law and take every step to overthrow it .....
