Big Brother - Should the police be able to demand ID anytime?

Police and immigration officers will be able to stop anyone and demand proof of identity under proposed new powers to be announced. Anybody who refuses the Big Brother demand could face arrest and a possible prison sentence. The move would effectively take Britain back to the Second World War, when people were stopped and asked to 'show their papers'. What do you think? Should the police be able to demand ID anytime?

@ Gray from Grimsby. Here's a quick question for you. Have you ever dropped anything on the road/pavement and not picked it up? Have you ever driven through a puddle and slightly splashed someone at the side of the road? You have too think very carefully about saying you don't intend to do anything illegal, as the two scenarios I just mentioned are illegal.

Its all ok saying yes yes yes to id cards and dna, but what happens when yours goes missing into the wrong hands. I have never been in bother with the law but would not gladly volunteer my dna

How utterly ridiculous! We live in a free country and we should be able to move about freely. I applaud the principle of having a police presence in city centre areas but resent the idea that I may be stopped and made to explain myself when minding my own business.

NO. NO NO. I am not a criminal, but a law abiding citizen. Notwithstanding that, this idea is a very serious infringement of our civil liberties. Keeping DNA samples is another infringement. For once, I am pleased we are subject to the democratic laws of Europe. Our government has no interest in civil liberties. It is controlled by very dangerous control freaks. The one thing I'd propose is that everybody should be forced to read Orwell's 1984, and pass a comprehension test on it, before they are allowed to vote. We'd lose one liberty, but gain protection for the rest.

I have no problem with the pol;ice asking for id or having my dna why should i worry as i dont intend to do anything illegal. Its like road cameras i say put them evey 5 ft and make anyone speeding pay full fine for each camera they go past.
