Smoking ban debate

Smoking ban debate

The ban on smoking in public places, which came into effect in England on 1st July 2007, has been a complete success, with 400,000 people kicking the habit in the last twelve months, according to a survey by Cancer Research UK. Do you agree that the ban has been successful?

Melly from Chelsea, you may have a point but in a confined space you're breathing in air thats been in other peoples lungs anyway. Every time you smell somebodys garic or beer breath you're breathing their expended air.

Oh, and another thing. Don't believe all these claptrap statistics about vast numbers of people not contracting various diseases since the ban. They're totally unsubstantiated and, as I understand it, the risks associated with smoking are long term. In any case, whether to smoke or not is my decision and not the government's. They can advise but not dictate. The truth, as always, should be welcomed but lies, distortion and propaganda should be identified and condemned.

Question that I've never had an answer to: why can't pubs be given the option of having totally separate bars for smokers? Customers would take their own food/drink into these areas and therefore no non-smoker or member of staff would be subjected to "passive smoking".
Of course, "passive smoking" wasn't the real reason for this intolerant puritanical legislation, and it amounts to nothing less than repressive and self-righteous persecution of adults who want to enjoy a perfectly legal product because they choose to. Democracy doesn't mean banning the activities of others that don't harm anyone else and are legal.
Can anyone now explain why this proposal is flawed?
