Smoking ban debate

Smoking ban debate

The ban on smoking in public places, which came into effect in England on 1st July 2007, has been a complete success, with 400,000 people kicking the habit in the last twelve months, according to a survey by Cancer Research UK. Do you agree that the ban has been successful?

Smoking has been known to be and been written about to be harmful since the 1930's - you may all have relatives, who had amputations of legs/feet, had lung problems, heart problems and other signs of damage to the body, due to inhaling tobacco smoke.
Apart from that - to be dependant from a substance - as in having to have another 'smoke' is very irritating (and very expensive) to most people, who depend on a drug.
Think of the money you would save in a lifetime:
    £10 per day = £300 per month = £3600 per year = £180.000 in 50 years !!
If you would save the £10 per day, you would be able to leave a large sum of money to your children/grandchildren - whether invested, or otherwise.
With this calculation I have drawn gasps from schoolchildren, who thought I did get the figures wrong.
Try again to stop this habit of dependence - good luck and determination to succeed.

if 400 000 people have kicked the habit in the past 12 months why has there been an increase in tobacco sales? sounds like another misleading campaign to me.. i smoke i hate smoking im trying to stop but i do not agree with the ban simply because there is something called freedom which we dont have in this country.. sell cigarettes make billions oh but dont smoke there oh no itll kill you .. now lets ban booze from pubs shall we as its a killer.. corrupt government me thinks? x

The ban has sucessfully upset smokers, cafe owners, publicans of back street taverns, cigarette machine vendors and breweries that are closing as a response to this and supermarket competition. I think the Government would prefer us all to smoke and drink at home so we can be more easily contained and to save on the policing bill at the weekends.
