The body of a pensioner may have lain undiscovered for five years in an Edinburgh city centre flat
This is avery sad case. While everybody is blameing someone, not one of us knows this womans background.Perhaps she has no immediate family, no children or grandchildren. Unfortunately banks etc. cannot inform other parties about no movement other than direct debits of a bank account. Privecy laws etc. Perhaps people thought she had moved away with family or to a nursing home. Sadly people do go away without telling other people.
God rest her soul.
Not all changes are for the better: Since pensions have been paid into bank accounts, the relevant organisations don't do their once customary checks - had she cashed her money at the PO it would have soon come to light that no money was being collected. As it appears, for 5 years payments were continuously going into her account unmonitored and direct debits bening collected for all utility needs. As a result, the sad fact remains - there is no longer a need for 'care in the community' - expect an increase in such sad tales.
some very sweeping statements on people in our society. i agree someone should have realised that somthing might be wrong but lets not condem everyone as a whole. a lot of people do a great deal for others and this goes unsung. lets try and be a little more glass half full and not just give up.
