   It's not a case of whether the Royal Family should be paid or not, although 69p per year doesn't seem a huge amount considering everything else we're conned into paying.
   More to the point, should we even have a royal family. As an anti-royalist I can see no reason for them at all, especially in the 21st century. In fact, the whole idea seems quaintly ridiculous, outmoded and patently daft in a modern, technological society.
   A royal family should be above reproach, but ours has been rocked by too many scandals for my liking, including two divorces and an unfortunate death in rather sad circumstances.
   The French had the right idea, if overly brutal, 200 hundred years ago. Our own revolution in the 17th century did achieve the same result, but when Cromwell died they got back in again and have been there ever since (aren't the current lot basically German with a smattering of Greek anyway).
   I think that what we really need is a referendum. If this a true democracy we should have the chance to decide - Royal Family or NO.
