contrary to arch from scotland, I and some others I know, do not go to bingo, betting shops or smoke. I live on benefits, which can be tough, but if i save too much I have it deducted at a greater rate, and there is no incentive to not spend. Budgetry control is necassary for modern living, and as a result of NOT doing bingo, betting, smoking or wearing the latest fashions I am able to afford to take my children away three times a year. Please therefore do not label all those on benefits with the same tag, we are not all the same. Thank you.

I remember when i was 11 in early 80s we had to go to school in knee high wellingtons. The snow was above me thighs! Nothing came to a standstill, everyone helped one another and all neigbours would dig the streets and footpaths. We had no double glazing or central heating and had to go to bed with just a hot water bottle. I think as time has passed on we are a soft nation and nowadays we take everything for granted. The smallest announcement on tv and we all start to panic. My message to everyone just take everything as it comes and dont panic!

I agree with gran from Sunderland and Arch from Scotland. I can remember the heavy snow fall we had back in 1969, it took me nearly 3 hours to get to work from Lichfield to Birmingham on a train. The office workers wasn't expecting me to come in because of how far I had to travel. These days, first bit of a cold snap and every one stays in doors. We have turned into whimps.

way back in the black and white days !! in the 1940s snow used to be three foot deep EVERY winter where i stay, and frost kept the snow for weeks on end,no central heating then, only had one coal fire in living room, which was opposite the hole in wall beds,so we were put to bed early, with hot water bottles, that is,if your parents could get you into the house,as we were enjoying ourselves too much, people nowadays are tooooooo soft, with double glazing etc.,you do not know how lucky you are, many a time we had no coal for days,no cold payment hand outs then, nowadays most of benefit handouts go into BINGO,Fags,Betting shops etc

people of around my age had remember every winter was cold, snow 4 foot deep 7 foot in some places. opening the door to go to school and not being able to get out because it was blocked by snow from top to bottom, the council men dug you out but you still went to school walking up the road because the snow on the path was to deep. schools did not close, no one stayed off work, the trams, buses and trains still ran. so what has happened to people a little bit of snow or ice and every thing stops, i for one can not understand it. try going to an out side toilet in four foot of snow, lace curtains frozen to the windows and that was inside, one coal fire in a room no central heating. so tell me why is it a little ice and snow and every thing stops what has happened to people.
