Are fuel companies ripping us off?

British Gas parent company Centrica posted half-year profits of £992 million, a day after hitting millions of customers with a record hike in gas bills. Are big fuel fat cats ripping us off? Does it make your blood boil? Let off a bit of steam.

Graham I most certainly agree that the Thatcher government was a major factor in the total demise of out capacity to build power stations of any type. Mrs Thatcher came to the North East to open the most advanced boiler making facility in Europe, which was developed with the help of much public funding. It was specifically designed to enable to manufacture of an established repeatable series of nuclear power stations. It built two such stations, one at Torness, and one at Heysham 2. The Thatcher governments intention at that time was to order a station a year to ensure the security of our national power supplies. As we all know that did not happen even though both stations were built to budget and on programme. The expensive and very sophisticated robotics were then mothballed and sold off, some as scrap, and the work force was made redundant. What terrible waste!! It goes without saying that Mrs Thatcher did not attend the closing of the facility! Although the Thatcher government made such a mess of the energy policy there is no doubt that the Labour government has been in office long enough to have seen the upcoming problems and made appropriate plans. Unfortunately Blair and his cronies did not see the need for such action but instead wasted much public money and many lives in fighting fruitless wars. It seems unlikely that Gordon Brown will stop dithering and take action on this to reduce our reliance on outside supplies, but he will have the problem mentioned by Graham that the uk no longer has the engineering expertise to build any sort of power station without outside help.
