Like you, I am getting on a bit, am 70. I became politically aware in the 60`s and have quite a good memory. I cant remember us having a Stell industry as well as the Americans. I presume you mean STEEL. In the 60`s and 70`s we were subsidising the steel industry by about a million pounds a day. that was a lot of money in those days. Overmanning was rife and industrial disputes a daily occurance. I was doing some building work in Port Talbot
and every day, 4 blokes walked into a hut and played cards all day. No one bothered them, they were getting paid for doing absolutely nothing. And they probably bunged the Union offial as well. The 70`s saw the rise of Japanese industry. They produced goods that were better than ours, on time, and a better price. This went right through the steel, ship building and motor industries. I wanted to order a Hillman Avenger in the mid 70`s and was told that I would have to wait 9... yes...9 months for one. This was because the communist shop stewards at Linwood would not allow the manufacturers to have a night shift. I went and ordered a Toyota and never regretted it. When things got tough, the first factory to be shut down was, yes you`ve guessed it Linwood. But of course it was all Thatchers fault. When we could not sell our steel for love nor money the then leader of the Labour Party, the senile Michael Foot said, `leave it in the field to rust` really joined up socialist thinking.

It seems to me that people have lost faith in this government. This should call for a vote of confidence as clearly in the past few months Gordon Brown has proved that he is not the man for the job. The uk is dead in all but name. Labour has already divided the country. People have realised too late that every single person in this government's front bench are inept at their jobs. But maybe we all miss the point being British (no matter what race or religion) has become meaningless Sold out by Tony Blair and new labour. Everything pales in comparison when you think of all the dead in all the wars fought to preserve the ideals that held the uk together and brough so many good people here who wanted to share those same values. No vote as promised at least let us vote you out Mr Brown do the right thing and call an election and give the people what they want.
