Defence Secretary Des Browne has taken the blame after two of the sailors captured by Iran sold their stories saying "ultimately, the buck stops here".
Conservative leader David Cameron has demanded an inquiry and Mr Browne himself has said, "clearly with hindsight I could have made a different decision".
Should Des Browne resign over the decision to allow the sailors to sell their stories? Do you agree with the angry backlash that has greeted the publication and broadcast of the accounts? Do the sailors have every right to profit from their captivity or does it set a dangerous precedent? Let us know what you think.
YES: He has made a complete pigs ear of this business. Resign along with the rest of this dubious "government".
I think the soldiers have every right to sell their stories. Does anyone know what it's like to be pawns in a violent political game?
If they are killed they are hero's, if they survive they come home, know body cares, they don't even get good hospital treatment, nobody appreciates what they do, and everybody just watches for their mistakes.
Browne should resign, not for what he did but for failing to have the back bone to support the naval staff and ignoring all the military and govermental old farts who run this country!!
i belief Des Brown should resign and it is my belief that all the laour Goverment should resign, as the cabinet is now be made up of Scottish mps,and since labour has been in power, they are graduall bringing the country down, what with the NHS,Iraq War,immigrants coming into our country, pensiners and disabled people living on the, bread line, schools suffering, care homes closing,Home office is a disgrace,i could go on and on the time has come to say good bye to Tony (The labour Goverment in general) and elect another goverment
After his performance in the house Brown probably feels that he has put this behind him. He has asked for two inquiries into the affair, which is no less than what we expect. However, the very first action that should have been taken, one that is traditional in the Royal Navy and has been from time immemorial, is that the captain of the mother ship should have been immediately relieved of his command and put in front of a Naval Review Board. For him not to have given some form of cover to the men under his command whilst carrying out these duties in what we all accept to be a war zone can only be viewed as negligence of the highest order. Also, the party involved in the operation should have been reminded of another age old command, 'Prepare to Repell Boarders' and armed appropriately. This is not the first time that the Senior Service has been made fools of. How many remember the utter fiasco of a Naval Ship being boarded by unarmed Frenchmen off the coast of Brittany a few years ago? Not a shot fired, not a bit of resistance shown and not Frenchman placed in irons! If we are to have armed forces, and pay for them to exist, then we must expect the same kind of devotion from ALL arms as we see from the Army lads in Iraq and Afganistan. And this means much better leadership and direction from the Top Brass who MUST stop being puppets of the government. If things are not right in the servcies, and there is plenty of evidence that they are not right, then they, the Top Brass should exercise their right to immediate access to the PM and demand that things be put right. If this means getting rid of Gordon Brown so as to loosen the treasury purse strings then so be it. It is too late now, of course, but by that one act New Labour would have secured their future at the next election.
As an ex-serviceman of 25 years I am experiencing feelings of sadness and despair at the decline in areas of our armed forces and at the waste of lives being wrought by the ineptitude of the politicians in charge.
This is a man in an extremely responible position in the
government whose judgment and decisions could ultimately affect us all.He needs to be well informed and right. I have no cofidence in this man or the government he represents.Do the propper thing Des. Go now,
