It didn’t even begin until 1963

Between 1960 and 1963 the charts were dominated by middle of the road crooning purveyed by jumper-wearing men like Pat Boone, Perry Como and Bobby Vinton and light jazz for cocktail parties. Elvis had sold his soul to Hollywood and the most dangerous artist of the era was Cliff Richard. The Beatles changed everything, of course, but at least one-third of the decade’s music is utter pish.

As someone who was 15 in 1963 I have to say the reviewer is spot on. Don t forget that when Please Please Me hit the charts The Beatles were touring as hellen Shapiros support act. In December of the same year they filled the Gaumont in Bradford, and that would have been over 3000 seats. After that of course British music dominated the music scene, the cross Atlantic trafic was always both ways. I was always (and still am) a big Beatle fan but they were in effect manufactured because after years of playing in jeans and leather jackets Brian Epstien put them in suits and turned them into a marketable product. The same thing happened to the Stones, but they were marketed as rebels.I never saw any mention of Mick Jaggers love of cricket, or the fact that Bill Wyman had done National service untill the 1980,s, as both items would have been very uncool. Non of the bands in the 60,s were manufactued in the way they are today ( the monkees were American). In fact I think that most of them are manufactured on an industrial estate in Miltom Keynes.

Now people, don`t take the captions serious.. The author of these Virgin Media captions is a critic with no apparent opinion but a negative one and has to slag off anything & everything to make themself feel better. He/She was probably ridiculed as a child and/or hated by their parents + more, and I doubt they have a milligram of talent or self esteem, and it seems they have the brain of a worm (without a head) ..The reason for their captions seems to be to get people to write their comments of disagreement, and to generally annoy the reader..So don`t let this worthless individual get to you as you Know their opinion is formed by a single brain cell (I`m over exaggerating here). It`s a wonder to me that such a person can be allowed to do this job, but notice how there is no name, photo or what have ya to identify this person.. That in its self states they are ashamed, or don`t have any guts or honour... In short, a person with sh!t for brains talks crap.

If music was so bad during the 60s how come it still influences many singers and musicians today and how come songs from that era are still being recorded, released by modern artists and bought today ?
The 60s was both a time of struggle and uncertainty with people still recovering from WW2, and having the constant threat of obliteration from nuclear war staring them in face.
The 60s was a time too of coming of age, especially of women who had been shackled to the kitchen sink for years and always having to bow down to the will of the male.
All this was reflected in the music songs of the 60s.
The wonderful thing about the 60s was that virtually every song that was produced conveyed a message, mainly of hope and the words contained in those messages were totally understandable.
Then, to get a record to the No.1 spot, 100s of thousands had to be sold, whereas nowadays it seems that if an artist can sell a couple hundred CDs they hit No.1 and are queueing for a Brit Award or the like.
I like a great deal of modern music, but a lot of it is simply mindless pap with no rhythm and words which are nonsensical and more often than not these words just cannot be understood, or it is the same words merely repeated over and over again.
I thank God that I was around during one of the best periods in history, not only for the music but for the love and hope that oozed out of all the youngsters who lived during those times.
    John
