Are CD giveaways bad for the music industry?

The news that Prince is giving away his new album with copies of the Mail On Sunday has sparked heated debate across the music industry. The newspaper argue that giving away music increases sales of the artist's back catalogue, whilst some members of the music industry have claimed that the move devalues music and could have catastrophic long-term consequences. What do you think?

prince is cutting out the middle man and getting it distributed by the most efficient way; more people buy a paper every day than a cd. he has made enough money from it and cut out the talentless record company execs who got rich off the back of talented musicians for too long.

Music is to be enjoyed by everyone not just those that can afford it. To try to keep it generating money is just not cricket.

So who are these 'some members of the music industry '? The recording company bosses maybe? Who really makes the money out of music? Some acts encourage CD copying so that their music can be heard by a wider audience - an interesting angle.

I think it is a great idea, it prompts people to think of the bands that have taken time out, and are making a come back. Prince for example I'd not thought of for ages until a free CD came out with a certain Newspaper.
