Last night saw the winners of the annual Virgin Media Shorts awards announced at a swanky do in London's BFI in Waterloo.
Now in its second year, Virgin Media Shorts is dedicated to finding and rewarding the makers of short films whose creative voices would be otherwise silent. With over 2,000 entries to watch – that's over 500 more submissions than last year's event – it left us a hell of a lot of short films to sit through.
But sit through them we did, and with the help of a panel of celebrities, film peers and special guests – including Kevin Spacey, Gemma Arterton and BAFTA rising star Noel Clarke – the entries were whittled down to the 12 best contenders.
Finally, at a glitzy ceremony in London's Southbank last night, the ultimate winners were announced. The grand prize of £30,000 in funding – plus, of course, the priceless commodity of being named Virgin Media Shorts winner 2009 – went to filmmaker Luke Snelling for his short film, Mixtape. You can see the film in full here. Congratulations Luke!
The People's Choice award went to director Andrew Gaynord for the hugely popular CGI-brows, a tongue-in-cheek short about a breakthrough in emotive cinematic technology. You can watch it here. Well done, Andrew.
Lastly, the Mobile Winner was the aptly named Michael Mann for his short entitled Rush 60, filmed entirely on mobile phones. Catch it here.
You can check out all the winners of Virgin Media Shorts 2009 here and thanks again for everyone who contributed and made this year's competition so special. See you next year!
