Recent revelations that an unusually high percentage of all car accidents are involving those under 20 years old have reawakened calls to raise the driving test age from 17 to 18 and even higher. Is 17 old enough to be able to drive safely on the roads? Or would a change in the law help reduce the number of road accidents? Tell us what you think.
Raise to 21 unaccompanied along with minimum age to buy alcohol as in many American states. Test from 18, but P plates and accompanied by qualified (21) driver. The way the leaving age is rising they're all going to be at school till then anyway.
Pippa.x from Nottingham I hope they do not raise the age and doubt very much that they will. Just one thing 'accidents' on the road are not down to weather or road conditions etc. if the road user drove to the conditions they would avoid these so called 'accidents'. It is the road user, driver in this instance, that is the cause. They are crashes, collisions or incidents call them anything but not accidents they are not accidents as they can be avoided.
ag from manchester if you have a driving licence hand it back, you know nothing when it comes to driving or road safety.
I'm 15 and want to drive as soon as possibly, not just to look 'good' but for going to work etc by raising the age it won't gain much as alot of driving is learning from experience and by raising it to 21 or what ever will just mean there will be more accidents in that age range as they will not have had the experience, personally i think that if 17 year olds have any accidents it could have probably happened to anyone at any age as the people i know who have had accidents at 17/18 it has been down to weather or road conditions etc and i'm not sayin there aren't stupid people out there that drive like their on a games consoles because there are but not all 17 years old are like that.
If you drive a scooter/motorbike you are limited to the size of engine to begin with and I think the same should apply when youngsters' under 25 first start driving a car until for a limited period after passing the driving test. The reason I quote the age of 25 is that on Insurance Policies, you have a higher excess on drivers under 25.
