Recent revelations that an unusually high percentage of all car accidents are involving those under 20 years old have reawakened calls to raise the driving test age from 17 to 18 and even higher. Is 17 old enough to be able to drive safely on the roads? Or would a change in the law help reduce the number of road accidents? Tell us what you think.
18 -21yrs - pass test than have Limited engine size and type, that would do the trick in slowing youngsters down untill they get more experience, we have 19 - 21yr olds with freinds who got cars given them by their parents and two of those freinds already wrote off cars within 6mths of passing - why - because of seeing how fast the car would go.. nuff said.!!!! . RESTRICT ENGINE SIZE
I used to have the opinion that restricted engine size was a solution, however being a traffic officer I have reported numerous young men and women 17/18 years old racing upto 60 in 30 limits in 1litre vehicles, granted it probably took 3 days to get up there but still happens. The only way is stiffer penalties, they have got it right with 6 points in 2 years and you need to retake your tests, but maybe a step further in formally disqualifying them for 6 months and redoing tests after, why not raise it to 5 years instead of 2. Although proven that more accidents occur in young men, raising the age would only put youngsters who respect their licences out of work, especially as public transport is shocking. Driving licences are an earned privilage NOT a right and the sooner people of all ages realise that the better, believe it or not it saves lives.
raise the age to 21. take the test. if you pass, you should only be allowed to drive a car of up 1200cc for a year. If you fail, you should have to wait a year before applying again. If you fail a second time, you wait another year. if you fail a third time you are put on a register and never allowed to apply again. Lets face it, if you cant do it in three tries you are incapable, and are a menace to road users. What the hell is all this about being able to take it as many times as you like???

YES, YES, YES, YES, YES!
Raise the limit to 21 for men (at least) & 17 is OK for girls.
What will a recently passed male at 17 do? - drive like a flippin' lunatic - that's what I did & it will always be the same.
Thing is, the government will do nothing. - that would offend someone's 'civil rights'
I was in an accident when I was 18 (not me driving, 4 of us the car)
By a turn of fate I was thrown clear, the other 3 died & the driver of the oncoming vehicle also died.
Why? because our driver (my best mate) was showing off & overtaking on a blind corner.
Still haunts me to this day.
I am a driving instructor & try to instill the right message, but I know what I was like at 17....
