Recent revelations that an unusually high percentage of all car accidents are involving those under 20 years old have reawakened calls to raise the driving test age from 17 to 18 and even higher. Is 17 old enough to be able to drive safely on the roads? Or would a change in the law help reduce the number of road accidents? Tell us what you think.
no need to raise age but restrict engine power, 35 bhp should be plenty, ally that to a 3 speed g/box and don't allow the carrying of passengers for the first 8 months. Now you can't impress your mates with that package, there will be plenty of these cars on the second hand market and insurance should be cheap, in fact why don't insurance companies talk to car makers and support a hire fleet. Minimum age could be lowered to 16yrs and 3 months!
Accidents are mainly due to inexperience, and generally rubbish drivers. If you are training to be a pilot, your skill doesn't matter as much as you have to have flown for a minimum amount of hours before they even allow you to take an exam. Alot of drivers take lessons with friends and relatives although this is a cheap solution, there should be a requirement for the amount of hours you need to spend with a driving instructor as it is with them you learn to drive.
Yes BUT onLY IF the likes of... km from yorks... netta from scotland... and the like are made to resit their driving test and be subject to exactly the same rules and regulations. As they appear to think that they are good and experienced drivers it should be no problem for them to pass. Should it!!!!
In a word yes, or they should be made to retest every year for the first three years of passing there test and i they fail make them resit utill they can pass three times in a row ! easy.
That way they get expirience and competance, todays roads have never been so busy and quick fix answers dont train people to drive correctly, just because you have passed your test does not mean you are an expirienced driver.
Take young person from the village, pass driving test 1st time, now send to center of big city 35 miles away from home in car, lets say monday 8.30 am to any location, how stressed or even will they do it easy.
what about the people who wont use a motorway and have been driving for years, should they be on the road ? they obviously have issues with driving.
It wouldnt be fair on people who live in areas without public transport, with parents who have a fair distance from work. Would be easier on parents for teens to be able to go to school/college/uni/work without being chauffered by them and If they move out at 18 then they'll miss parental supervision. Experience is the most important factor and stats have shown that accident liability is usually halved after 2 years of driving experience. Im 18 and have only been driving for 7 months and I havent had any problems driving
