Recent revelations that an unusually high percentage of all car accidents are involving those under 20 years old have reawakened calls to raise the driving test age from 17 to 18 and even higher. Is 17 old enough to be able to drive safely on the roads? Or would a change in the law help reduce the number of road accidents? Tell us what you think.

Latest casualty figures are always about 18 months old.
This may suprise you, it did me (a liitle) when I looked it up. In 2006 there were 15,593 injury accidents involving vans , 2% of which were fatal and 12% serious. The accident involvement rates for vans are much lower than for HGVs and cars, although a higher percentage of accidents are fatal and serious than for cars – probably due to the larger vehicle size. (DfT Accident Statistics)
Although van drivers have fewer accidents, indications are that they cause over half of the accidents they are involved in. Van driver accidents peaked in the 21-25 years age group – earlier than for other categories of vehicle.
