Do you trust car mechanics?

A Which? magazine undercover investigation found a staggering 92% of garages failed to spot basic faults on cars taken in for servicing. The report suggests slack practices are rife in the garage servicing industry and while few carried out significant unnecessary work, 20 of the 50 garages charged for windscreen-washer fluid despite the fact it had been topped up prior to the cars being taken in.

Do you trust mechanics to do a good job servicing your car? Do you feel confident putting vital safety work in their hands? Are you a mechanic who feels let down by others in the industry? Have your say.

im sure the only people that said yes were machanics, or people that know or work for machanics,,, hello wake the up 92% are con artists,,, i only trust genuine dealers,,id pay even 3 times as much to know i am getting a genuine brand new part repair properly with no further faults,,, and if a genuine dealer fixed a car that later had problems, you could take it back and theyll make it right,,,, you try doing that in a little garage they make excuses to get out of it, then theyll tell you they are fully booked, and make you wait, and if you carry on pushing they will take the car off you for repair but god knows what they will do,,, either nothing!!!! or they will damage it.....
its a shame isnt it,,,, but i believe in kharma, what goes around comes around... so i have no worrys

the way i see it, is machanics seem to assume you jnow nothign about cars so they try to rip you off, you go in for one problem and they tell you other things are wrong with it,, i think almost all garages are like that, except well established ones, like the geuine dealers, adn others that are well estabilished... small garages are full of idiots that dont know much more about cars than you do...... they just decided to ipen a garage thats all....
but its a dilema going to places lilke that, you can either trust thme get ripped off and alsom they may do other things to your car.. if they are not honest to start with they will do anything...........and if you know they are lying and dont trust them,,, and they know that,,, then how stupid must you be to leave a nice car with them....
the way i see it is i would pay more and go to a honest real dealer,,,, and get your car back in great condition,,,, then go to a cheap one and end up paying more in the long run, in time stress and money......
its not just machanics its the fact that everyone nowadays in this day and era are just selfsih lyoing scumbags,..... where as morals would have made people work honestly,,,, now everybody not only in machanics are lying scam artists.... morals dont exist anymore.....
i wouldnt over charge anyone and i wouldnt do work that didnt need to be done,,,,, wouldnt we all like to live in a world like that,,,,,, so why is everyone else doing the same...... ing .... machanics suck,,,, i wouldnt trust any of them,,, but they have thte tools,,,,, so just make sure you go to a well established and not a scanky cheap garage...
if your gonna go to a scanky cheap garage then the only thing your gonna get is a bad job,,, jobs that dont need doing,,,,, and maybe even cutting a few wires and damagin your car so you have to go back in the future..

I have an old L Reg Astra 1.4 which suddenly started to stall on me every so often. It would either lurch and then happen whilst I was driving or the engine would dip whilst stationary and then stall. Having taken the car to a Garage I was not very happy with, I pulled the car out to take it to a Garage that I thought would be more trustworthy. After a diagnostic test they could find nothing. Firstly the distributor cap was changed, then after it continued to stall I looked up 'Idle Control Valve/Thermostat' on the Web. Asked them to change it. They charged me around £240.00. Still the car kept stalling, At last ditch attempt, I took it to a Vauxhall Garage who actually charged me less for a diagnostic test. Still, nothing. In desperation I asked them to keep it for one more day and to drive it, hoping that it would stall, It did.. Received a phonecall later that evening to say that they had found the problem. Wait for it..... THE THERMOSTAT AND ConTROL VALVE HAS NEVER BEEN CHANGED!!!.
So, as furious as I am, I have asked Vauxhall to save the old part, for evidence. I have also craftly called the dodgy garage to request a print out of the work carried out... I must admit, when I rang them, the mechanic seemed concerned as to why I wanted a report but I told him that I want to now sell the car and I will need information for the buyer!! he sounded as if he couldn't understand that the car was now working properley, because he knew damn well that it shouldn't be, (because the work was not carried out)!.
I am very proud and will fight this until I get my refund back. In total I have now paid about £400 on that car. I would have only got about £300 if I were to sell it!!. I will firstly try to settle privately, also requesting a little extra for inconvenience and stress, If they do not oblige, I will then tell them that unless they do so I will report them to Trading Standards as I have proof from Vauxhall. Let's see who has the last laugh!!
You shouldn't have to be stupid to trust somebody and it is sad that, we should have to be so suspicious but I have know learnt to do more homework before I committ to any old Garage!!

Just got ripped off by Kwik Fit after doing work they reassuerd me was the problem ,had same problem only made worse to be told that the same people who gave me this reassurance are fitters and not mechanics, correct me if im wrong but replacing an alternator is a mechanical job ? Also paid for them to fit new belts and since been told by an idependant mechanic that the belts have not been touched. once they have your money they dont care about the customer service.
