Figures suggest that Britain is the Gatso capital of Europe, do you think that these cameras are just another way to cream money from motorists? Or are they a tool for preventing fatal road accidents? According to Swindon Borough Council, they may not be the best way to make roads safer. What do you think?
I do believe speed cameras are money spinners for the Police forces up and down the country. It is also true that most cameras are placed in places where there are no children or elderly at risk. Mostly they are placed on stretches of straight roads where, incidentally, speed limits have been lowered from what used to be a safe 60 mph down to 50 mph and 40 mph limits have been lowered to 30 mph. Now the Highways Authorities are going to lower 30 mph down to 20 mph, so we feel we could get out of the car and walk faster! Having said all that, I prefer speed cameras to those rediculous speed bumps and idiotic chicanes placed every 20 yards which are more of a hazard than any speeding motorist, especially for ambulances and fire tenders. Another point is, if it is safe for police cars/ambulances/fire tenders to reach phenominal speeds and jump traffic lights to attend a crisis of any sort how come normal traffic has to crawl along at the new "safer" speed limits? Yes to cameras in really strategic places but NO to the massive number in unwarranted areas just collect revenue.
Can you imagine what the roads would be like without these cameras, the standard of driving is appalling now, there certainly would be a lot more accidents and deaths, and as for people who are short of time and in a hurry, start out a bit earlier!
If it wasn't a money making exercise and speeding was really the great crime it is supposed to be then the punishment should be more severe. IE, such as a ban from driving, say one week for every mile over the limit, but that would limit the source of revenue wouldn't it? Drivers would think twice about speeding if they thought they'd get banned but all our government and local councils are really bothered about is raking in the cash. I have nothing to fear from speed cameras but they are a malicious intrusion into our lives as they are they there under the pretence of safety when their real aim is to raise money.
It is only drivers who break the law who get "ripped off" by speed cameras. Too many people do not consider speeding a crime, but would be up in arms if other forms of crime were not policed and punished. I have never been caught by a speed camera, for the simple reason that I do not break speed limits.
Too right these are a rip off.I work for a company delivering "things" all over East Anglia (can`t say what, coz if i said i`d get the sack !).It`s the same all over, these poxy things and their mobile van versions are just revenue collectors.
Spare a thought for blokes like me,i`ve got a van full of stuff, customers whingeing coz i`m running late, my boss breathing down the back of neck coz HE`S getting earache from people and stuck behind some flamin pensioner doing 40 mph.
OF COURSE I`M GonNA SPEED,I`VE GOT NO FLAMIN CHOICE !!!!
