Figures suggest that Britain is the Gatso capital of Europe, do you think that these cameras are just another way to cream money from motorists? Or are they a tool for preventing fatal road accidents? According to Swindon Borough Council, they may not be the best way to make roads safer. What do you think?
This is like the debate about CCTV - if we are not BREAKING the LAW what do we have to worry about. After all if you are speeding it shows an arrogance of disregard to the law or more seriously you are not concentrating enough on your driving!
Such a burning issue - which upsets many I drive through an absolute shed load on my way to the office each morning - approximately 6 on a 26mile trip!
I dont understand because I "clock watch" - now if I am watching my clock (and therefore wallet) - am I watching the road? No...
Some safety expert tell me...is it safer to "clock watch" or watch the road....
EXACTLY....Cameras are just ANOTHER road tax. Frankly we should be chopping them down like trees in the rainforest.
speed cameras only annoy those who choose to speed. What is the problem if you are not speeding you will not be caught. The only way these things can make money is by paople committing an offence so therefore if no-one was to offend then we would not have them. I understand all of the arguements against them and agree that they may be sited in areas which are in some peoples opinions unsuitable. However I also have to question the motive of the person who decides to put them where they do. They obviously believe that people will be speeding in these areas otherwise they would not spend the money putting them there. Granted we should maybe have them outside of schools etc but surely that would cause even more annoyance as people would feel that there were too many of them then. A question to maybe consider would be: IS A DRIVER SPEEDING on A FAST ROAD CAUSING MORE OR LESS OF AN OFFENCE THAN A PERSon SPEEDING on A QUIET ROAD. OR ALTERNATIVELY WOULD A PERSon BREAKING into A RICH PERSonS HOUSE BE CAUSING MORE OR LESS OF AN OFFENCE THAN A PERSon BREAKING into A POOR PENSIonERS HOUSE. An offence is an offence and it should be dealt with regardless of where or how it occurs. the only problem I have with the whole system is that speeding penalties should maybe be staggered more. For example a small fine only for a first offence, followed by a larger fine and points for a secondary offence within say 12 months. through to a licence being revoked for maybe a third or fourth offence within the 12 month period.
And by the way for those of you thinking I sound like a doddery old lady this is not the case. I drive approx 30000-40000 miles a year as a delivery driver and i have received 3 points before but I still believe in having the cameras despite all of the excuses against. To say get rid of them is like saying get rid of the police of the streets. Its not very often you see them but at least when you do it is unlikely you will see a crime being committed in front of them.
My mum was captured doing 72 in a 60 zone, this was on a dual carridgeway. Bearing in mind this was at 2:30am with virtually no other cars around. Can someone explain to me how that is a safety measure?
It's now time to say 'NO! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!'
