Portsmouth City Council is slashing the speed limit in residential areas from 30mph to 20mph and other councils are expected to follow suit. Will this save lives or is bureaucracy just killing motoring?
if the speed limits were ok for cars with out ABS -with design faults etc it should be ok now. it is the drivers that are at fault
30mph is a perfectly safe speed limit in residential areas. It has been since the limits were set. If people stuck to the limits then there wouldnt be this discussion about reducing it further. Modern cars are more powerful than the cars around at the time of the limits were set, however, they also have far more safety features nowadays and much much more powerful and better brakes. The biggest problem is that people do not take enough care for themselves and drivers (I am one) do not pay enough attention to their surroundings. If you are driving at 30 along a street and see a child then you should automatically slow down, just in case. This is a requirement of your driving test to ensure that you are aware of what's going on. If anyone is arrogant enough to think - they won't jump out in front of me - then they shouldnt be driving. Accidents do happen but hitting a pedestrian in a speeding car will surely kill them. Hitting a pedestrian driving at the speed limit may injur them but they are likely to survive. We do not need to reduce the speed limit, we need to stop driving like we own the road.
20 is a safe speed for the built up areas, remember you were all children once and played in the street with a ball, not every one was a slucky as me to grow up in the country side.
I also beleive that car driving parents should walk their little ones to school and not drive them, cars at school gates should be banned, I used to teach cycle proficieny at a local school and the things I saw would make anyones hair curl.
Speeds should be as they are now, but they should mean 30 or below in a 30, and so on, and not 35/40 in a 30, on the motorway, no matter what speed you travel at there is always some idiot who will overtake you, and since the fuel crises I now travel at between 50 and 55, and that can save up to 20% fuel, I have averaged 50 MPG and more in a 1.2 Corsa, I get overtaken by all, but I find its less stress, I get to my destination, and not very much later than the speeders, and above all I don’t kill anyone.
Well done Maggie Capuchin ... I was chewing a wasp and you made me laugh
