Is 20mph too slow?

Is 20mph too slow?

Portsmouth City Council is slashing the speed limit in residential areas from 30mph to 20mph and other councils are expected to follow suit. Will this save lives or is bureaucracy just killing motoring?

Dam good idea, the Spanish did it years ago making it very safe to walk about in town as it should be. We all know that speed/muppet drivers are the main cause of serious accidents and injuries but there are a lot drivers these days who drive too fast for no logical reason. The t**t who goes on about petrol consumption obviously does not know that fuel consumption drops significantly at lower speeds and bearing in mind that the average journey within Portsmouth is only 3 miles, it is not going to make much difference is it? (You dinlo!).

There are in fact many more low speed collisions than high speed ones. Of course high speed collisions cause far more devestation and obviously more fatalities. If the streets appropriately need to have the limit reduced then that's all well and good but what we should be doing is actually driving at the limit in the first place. You will probably find that these particular roads have been reduced from 30 to 20 because everyone drives at 40 on them so if they reduce them to 20, they might slow down to 30. People complain about safety cameras, speed traps etc but they wouldnt need to if they kept to the limits. How come Mel from West Yorkshire thinks dual carriageways should be 60? Most of them are in fact 40 with safety cameras on them. I'm a driver and own a powerful car but I don't need to have my foot down all the time. 20mph would kill my car!

MEL PRICE FOR TRANSPORT MINISTER!! but can we keep the 70 on motorways please. not too sure on the speeding fines of £1000 either. the roadspeeds change as you drive along them on different stretches.everyone makes a mistake and speeds to some degree albeit until you see the next sign....... or the camera flash. people don`t speed through cameras on purpose just to pay a fine you know, so hitting them with a 1000 pound fine and loss of half the allowed points seems rediculous....changed me mind....i can`t support you...your as daft as the current halfwits in power.

Another stupid think tank idea, full of impracticalities. At 20mph. I`d be in second gear, so up goes my fuel consumption and so will pollution. It`s up to these stupid parents who can`t or wont keep their little rats under control and teach them road sense.
