Lewis Hamilton's rookie year in 2007 proved just what prodigious talent and careful nurturing can do.
Spotted early on and supported by McLaren through his karting, Formualas Renault, Three and GP2 titles Hamilton stunned the world, scoring podiums in his first nine races.
He became the youngest ever driver to lead the Championship and only the second after Jacques Villeneuve to win more than one race in their debut year.
Despite narrowly failing to win the title in 2007 he silenced the doubters with a mature pole and win at the 2008 opener in Melbourne.
Who'd bet against him now?
Races 18
Championships 0
Wins 5
Podiums 13

Look... Hamilton is a very good driver and today proved to all those sceptics that he is capable of winning the championship and one day he will. He will make mistakes like everyone else but that's because he loves driving and as a rookie he is doing very well. I never really was into F1 until Hamilton came into it. And let this guy be an inspiration to anyone that has a dream to achieve. Because he is proving that if you put your mind to it you will succeed. Good luck in Germany and i'll be watching Hamilton get the pole there.
Oh my god! Lewis is 5! Cool! i am into f1!
Mike is absolutely correct. Hamilton has tremendous potential but the title is 'Britain's ten best ever F1 drivers '.one season makes him very good. John Watson started a Grand Prix in 22nd place and won it. Thats what I call best ever
I hope he wins the title because he is a great driver but best ever????
As much as he is obviously talented, I cannot see how Hamilton warrents being in the Top 10 of all time; let alone up there in 5th position after just one season! Disgraceful
