Inflation is now dropping at its fastest rate for 16 years thanks to falling fuel prices. But despite this the cost of a typical shopping basket leapt to 21.3 per cent in November – adding more than £1,100 a year to family grocery bills. Are the supermarkets ripping us off by not passing on price reductions?
The bottom line is yes. My corner shop's prices on lots of items are very close to Tesco who I use to shop on line with. one thing worries me though, suppliers to supermarkets must be troubled by supermarket battles, as they cut prices (not as much as they could) their suppliers are paid less and will presumably soon be out of business. Where do we go from there?
we are coming up to a budget, no help to anybody if inflations falling!!!!
What a stupid question as VM should know all too well that things will never get cheaper with their own EXTORTIonATE TARIFF..!!
Yes,shop around, where prices are too high then vote with your feet,be it petrol, groceries or whatever and let the high price merchants stew.It worked near me when the first fuel strike happened, one or two garages put prices up high as fuel ran short and folk who had to have it bought it,but as things improved no one bought there, and as a result three closed in no time.Times are tough, but they,ve been tougher and despite the government and greedy companies, banks etc we,ll win through. We need to hang in there and be smart in the meantime.
What is happening with the comments here? (jdiamond from Glasgow, for example)What do immigrants have to do with the subject = are the supermarkets ripping us off? And the answer is - yes they are ripping us off. There are only a few of them and although they compete against each other they still manage to rip us off. But I also think that we should go back to a more basic way of living. We do not need all the packaging and fancy look of groceries. Just buy seasonal fruit and veg, if possible from your area. And cook more often from scratch - can be a lot cheaper than buying ready made meals that are very unhealthy for you too! Potatoes, Pasta, Rice - all go a long way. Meat just once or twice a week - much healthier anyway. I am a full time working mother of two teenage children and can manage this. Cooking a meal does not have to take hours. We have to beat the supermarkets at their own game and only buy what we really need. Far too much food gets thrown away. And please again: do not stray of the subject just because you want to blame everything that is wrong with your life on immigrants!
