UK employees work longer hours than the rest of Europe and get less bank holidays. Do we place too much importance in our careers in this country and all end up stressed as a result? Do you feel pressured to work too hard? Share your thoughts.
Yes of course we do we sacrifice happiness for success. I hate it when parents work such long hours all so thst "we can get a nice car or go away to Florida". What about the rest of the year? most ppl wouldnt admit to caring about success more than their family but in the end, they do end up giving that message.
Yes, too many of us do work long hours. Unfortunately we have to just to scrape by.
In the past six months I have had one weekend off. I work a minimum of 66 hours per week (usually far more) just to support myself and my partner. What do I have to show for it? The answer unfortunately is very little. We get by but unfortunately that comes at a price....that price being the time we have available to spend together.
I would love to work shorter hours but with the government robbing me to pay for criminals, spongers, and public services which they do not even provide, this is simply not an option for me.
The influx of immigrants to work "the positions we English do to do" is a con. Immigrating 600,000 economic refugees creates its own industry and does extremely little to help this country.
What it does is:-
Create more profits for directors, Puts extra pressure on public services,
Keeps wages down to a minimum and Forces people to work overtime.
Immigration should be stopped immediately.
We still have a large REAL unemployment percentage, despite the "official" figures.
we have to do overtime because the cost of living in this country is ludicrous with stealth taxes ordinary taxes council; taxes the lidt goes on and on, and what happens when you do a few more hours so you can treat yourself oh yes the grubby taxman rubs his grubby mits together and smiles and steals even more from you. ita a vicious circle and there is no escape

You are so right. I absolutely loathe companies who take advantage of people's quality of life by sucking them in like they did to you. I had a similar experience when I was young and ambitious, believe me, the ambition didn't last long! Companies take the p*** when they try to suck people into their stupid philosophies, such as what they perceive as 'commitment'. I'm only 36 but I am far too cynical after my experiences at work and hate the way some companies operate. I don't beleive in working unpaid overtme or doing more than what is stated in my contract (that is perceived as going over and above your role? so you get a sticky star! so what!? yes , this really does happen). So I don't do it. The more you do it, the more they expect. And then they try to make you feel guilty for not doing more than what is stated in your contract, ha! what a liberty! My advice is, if more people didn't feel forced to do more than what they are contracted to do, there wouldnt be such a problem. A contract is a legally binding document remember!
And certainly don't feel guilty about it - it's your life that it's swallowing up! I think the only time it is worth going over and above your call of duty is when it is actually doing something worthy, like saving a life, instead of lining someone else's pockets.
