Is Britain Europe’s job stress capital?

Is Britain Europe’s job stress capital?

UK employees work longer hours than the rest of Europe and get less bank holidays. Do we place too much importance in our careers in this country and all end up stressed as a result? Do you feel pressured to work too hard? Share your thoughts.

We all work far too meny hours but most of it is to pay the tax man.We pay far more in tax and indirect tax than any other european country. Our petrol/diesel is the most expensive rip off going. Most families have both parents working to make ends meet.Im all for families spending time together over lunch/dinner and weekends but with shift work, shops open 7 days a week and some 24 hour all you seem to do is work work work.Retire, what dose that mean?"O" i remember now, work till you drop dead so you dont collect a pension. Then again thats if there is money to give you a pension, probably be spent by our government by then. This country needs a good shake up about working hours for all workers. Its driven by sheer greed and nothing more.

it is about time we realised that life is short, far to short to get stressed about work. earn enough for a roof over your head and food on the table then get on with living.

The obsession with owning your own home is the cause.

Abroad they rent, they do not have to work long hours to pay back a fortune just to own a few bricks in 30/40 years time.

If you think about it, it is complete madness. But we live by class and keeping up with the Joneses.

I have friends in France and Italy.
They relax, all have lunch hours or more, start late on Mondays finish early on Fridays and they think we're mad.

    Patch from Birmingham says:
'Every other member State of the European Union are party to the European Working Time Directive. The uk won an exemption which effectively gave employers the ability to force employees to opt out of rights enjoyed throughout Europe. '

once again an opinion without checking the facts. The basic Working Time Regulations provide for:
a limit of an average of 48 hours a week which a worker can be required to work, though workers can choose to work more if they want to at present under the uk’s opt-out.. Note ... 'if they want to'.

Do we work too many hours?
    No
