UK employees work longer hours than the rest of Europe and get less bank holidays. Do we place too much importance in our careers in this country and all end up stressed as a result? Do you feel pressured to work too hard? Share your thoughts.

You are so right. I absolutely loathe companies who take advantage of people's quality of life by sucking them in like they did to you. I had a similar experience when I was young and ambitious, believe me, the ambition didn't last long! Companies take the p*** when they try to suck people into their stupid philosophies, such as what they perceive as 'commitment'. I'm only 36 but I am far too cynical after my experiences at work and hate the way some companies operate. I don't beleive in working unpaid overtme or doing more than what is stated in my contract (that is perceived as going over and above your role? so you get a sticky star! so what!? yes , this really does happen). So I don't do it. The more you do it, the more they expect. And then they try to make you feel guilty for not doing more than what is stated in your contract, ha! what a liberty! My advice is, if more people didn't feel forced to do more than what they are contracted to do, there wouldnt be such a problem. A contract is a legally binding document remember!
And certainly don't feel guilty about it - it's your life that it's swallowing up! I think the only time it is worth going over and above your call of duty is when it is actually doing something worthy, like saving a life, instead of lining someone else's pockets.
10 years ago I had a breakdown. I was working for a supermarket company and was expected to work 60+ hours a week. It was called "commitment". This is the norm in many jobs, particularly in management and is completely unacceptable. I saw several people suffer the same fate as me before I finally fell victim to the bullying that is rife amongst "senior" management. Never again. I`d rather work for far less money and work far fewer hours than go through that again thanks
stop this silly violation but on the subject of working a long time. I entertain for a living nd it takes all my spare tme though really there is no spare time. All our time is for survival. Spare time is a misnoma.
i think some people these days think more of their career than their family, its all about me me me, theres no family life anymore conversations a thing of the past, no wonder families are breaking up all over the place
Definately, I hardly see my dad cause he works 7 days a week.
