Is smacking a child acceptable?

"I was smacked as a kid, never did me any harm". But is this really true? Hitting an adult is seen as violence or abuse, but is this different with children? Should we smack our kids? Were you smacked as a child? Do you smack your own children? Should it be made illegal?

A child arrives on this earth as a blank sheet - it needs to know where lines are drawn - the reason that this society is in the mess that it is in is because that line is either non-existant or blurred beyond recognition.

I was spanked as a child, grounded, sent to time outs. It all depended on what I did. when I was 9 or 10 I was being really smart to my mom and she suprised me by smacking me across the face. My face was read for a couple of hours and I was crying from the pain. When I was 16 I told a major lye to my dad and both my parents were spanked until they were 18. My dad told me that day to bend over and he wanted to give me an old fashioned spanking for hurting him so much from lying. I told him times have changed and that i was to old to be spanked. This was back in the early 90's He did not put it took a long time to earn trust. and I was grounded with no T.V. and Phone for a month. I should have been spanked for lying.

I recently saw a very young mother who seemed to be totally out of control with her small child (no more than 2). The child went to run away in a pedestrianised area, was roughly handled and the mother screamed, swore and threatened to smack the child's "f****** face" if it didn't shut up. I was also met with verbal abuse. Had there been a police officer nearby I would have reported her. If she did this in a public place, what on earth does she do in private? The child's distress stayed with me. Nothing can excuse the behavour of this person who should love, protect and nurture her child into a responsible, loving adult.

Hull lad, that made me laugh and brought back memories. I "wagged" off school one monday morning because being left handed made it difficult for me keeping up in the sewing class. I also had half a crown for my dinner money, being the honest child I was,I knew the half crown didnt belong to me, so guess what!!! I put it down the drain! It's been the laughing point over many a meal, and no,my parents didn't smack me, just gave me a hug for being so naive.

When I was caught with half a crown (2/6) in my pocket I stole from my fathers cricket club. I got my backside smacked red and blue. I never stole again!
It did me no harm, even at 9 yrs old, I thought I deserved it. I think my good ole pop would be facing prosecution these days.
I think we're a softer generation now and look at the state the uk is in now.
