Is smacking a child acceptable?

"I was smacked as a kid, never did me any harm". But is this really true? Hitting an adult is seen as violence or abuse, but is this different with children? Should we smack our kids? Were you smacked as a child? Do you smack your own children? Should it be made illegal?

I used to have the crap beaten out of me by my stepdad, any excuse for a hiding.Eventualy i became immune to the beatings so he started to beat my mum or sister to upset me.one day, shortly after my 14th birthday he set about my mum so i kicked him as hard as i could in the goolies and he went down like a sack of pooh.I smashed my new snooker cue to bits over his fat head and had to be dragged off him.
My mum kicked him out the same day but she took him back a couple of weeks later so me and my sis went to live with our gran and grandad
We used to phone up to see if he was out and go and see mum,she would`nt see us for about 8 months so i went round on my bike one day and she was black and blue.
I found out he was up at the local pub spending the housekeeping so i went in and slagged him off in front of his cronies and offered him outside for a fight.
He smashed a bottle and came at me but some blokes in the pub grabbed him and kicked his head in,he was chased out of the area by some of the local hard men when they found out about the beating we all had to take.
He died last year from cancer of the bum,a fitting end for a monster, well at least in his case.
Me and my sister and mum are both doing ok now, she`s got a nice new bloke who treats her well.
sorry for boreing you all but i felt like telling someone.

a light smack possibly will work when necessary when i was in junior school some of the teachers were downright bullies and used the ruler cane slipper and board rubber with great relish thank goodness those days have gone

if it is a light tap yes just to make the child stop and think but not full blown beatings like some of my friends had to suffer from their dads and sometimes mums

as a child, i had plenty of clumps, including the belt, slipper, anything that came to hand. i knew what buttons to push, with my parents. i can look back on it and say it has`nt done me no harm, it hurt at the time, but you get over it. the one thing it did do for me , is at school when bully`s started, it would`nt matter how big they were, i would stand up to them, cos getting a beating off me mum was far worse. i have children myself now, and try not to smack them ,as taking things they like away, works better .

I wonder if we will have any Baby P cases in 2009. I sincerely hope that we dont have any but only time will tell.
Lets hope that this year all children everywhere will be loved and taught how to behave.
